What Happens if Donald Trump Loses and Won't Concede?

Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized the presidential election as rigged and refused to commit to conceding if he loses the race.
As Election Day begins, some are asking what would happen if Trump loses and declines to concede.
The answer is: Nothing.
There is no legal or constitutional requirement that a losing candidate publicly concede, experts told NBC News.
A refusal to concede in the face of a clear loss would certainly be unusual — and probably controversial — but it would not impact the formal results in any way.
"The act of conceding is not a legal act," political scientist Rick Hasen said.
"It doesn't have any legal effect as to whether or not someone is declared a winner," added Hasen, who runs the Election Law Blog.

"There is no legal requirement for the loser to concede," says Barbara Perry, director of presidential studies at the University of Virginia's Miller Center.
The entire "concept of a concession speech as we know it," Perry added, "didn't exist at the founding" of the nation.
The tradition of concession speeches only became prominent recently as TV addresses became common, which historian John Vile recounts in his book on the practice, "Presidential Winners and Losers: Words of Victory and Concession."
"The concession speech itself has no legal status," said Edward Foley, who runs the election law program at Ohio State University.
"It's more part of this cultural expectation," he told NBC News, adding that Trump has clearly "suggested he wouldn't give the typical concession speech."
Scott Farris, a historian who studies losing presidential candidates, said Trump is also unusual because he is unlikely to be constrained by his future standing within the party.
"Because Donald Trump is not conventional politician looking ahead to run again, he's going to have less inhibitions in criticizing the result and the process," he said.
That does not mean, however, that the entire GOP would back Trump's refusal to concede if the results showed a clear loss.
Experts consulted by NBC News differed on how a non-concession might play out.
Polls show about 27 percent of Trump voters would not accept the results if their candidate lost, compared to 11 percent of Clinton voters, and some analysts believe a refusal to concede makes it far harder for the public to accept the election's outcome.
"How are we going to solve problems through policies if we have 40-45 percent of the people not accepting the result?" asked Perry, the historian. "Our system could be doomed, and our country could doomed."
Other experts predicted that given a clear loss, other Republican leaders would concede regardless of what Trump does.
James McCann, a Purdue political scientist who studies concession speeches, said: "Say Hillary Clinton wins and is recognized. If Donald Trump decides not to concede, and he wants to continue charging that the system is rigged, I'd imagine that Mike Pence would concede on the ticket's behalf."
Other historians say no matter what happens Tuesday night, critical damage was already done when Trump refused to commit to the principle of accepting a clear loss, when pressed by Fox's Chris Wallace at the third presidential debate.
"To say that he would 'leave us in suspense,' is really a breach of we normally have in American presidential politics," presidential historian Robert Dallek said.
On the other hand, Trump's aides tried to calibrate the GOP candidate's unusual stance at the debate by suggesting he was simply reserving the right to challenge close results.

All candidates retain that right — regardless of their public statements — and experts consulted by NBC News said its a routine prerogative of both candidates.
"If the election is very close it is perfectly reasonable for a candidate not to concede immediately," University of Florida political scientist Michael McDonald said.
McDonald, who advises The Associated Press on its Election Night calls, explained candidates in very close may sue for recounts or other challenges in the designated certification period, when "election officials check the results."
If Trump and Clinton are separate by one state, or just a few, then the trailing candidate could refuse to concede and sue over the results.
Unlike a stand-alone refusal to concede, litigation can impact the outcome, as Americans remember from the 2000 election. A refusal to concede combined with legitimate lawsuits, in other words, can impact the outcome.
But it's a very narrow path.
According to a review of state election laws by NBC News, the largest battleground states require extremely close margins to trigger automatic recounts. (The margin is under one half of a percentage point in Florida, Pennsylvania, Ohio and North Carolina.)
Historically, the results of a race only shift through a recounts when the margin is far less than half a point.
That means both the math and the law make post-election lawsuits an unlikely path to victory — but one that can't be ruled out until all the results are in.

Donald Trump Jr. said today his father will work to unite the country, whether he wins or loses today’s presidential election.
Trump, who said "the last 18 months has been the longest 10 years of my life," stressed his father's ability to "bring people together," citing his willingness to campaign in the inner cities as an example.
"It's been incredible to see people who have been disaffected by the political process," he told “Good Morning America” today.
He added that people frequently approach him on the campaign trail and offer words of encouragement. "It's moving," he added.
Trump stressed his father's status as an outsider, and encouraged voters who felt disillusioned by elitism to vote him into office.
"I want everyone to turn out," he said. “Everyone who has been let down by the system."
The real estate mogul, however, faces an uphill climb to the White House, according to experts.
Prognosticator Nate Silver, who accurately predicted the winner in all 50 states in the 2012 presidential election, told "GMA" yesterday morning that Hillary Clinton is a "2 to 1 favorite" to win the presidency.
As of this morning, Donald Trump's odds of winning the presidency had decreased from yesterday, according to Silver's model, dropping to less than a one-third chance of winning the White House.

European stocks could drop as much as 10% if Donald Trump wins the U.S. presidential election, according to Deutsche Bank. The bank argues in a research note that economic uncertainty would spike during a Trump presidency, leading to confusion over tax, immigration and trade policy. Deutsche Bank's analysts said that Trump's messaging on economic plans has been "far from consistent." Even Trump's plans to increase spending on infrastructure -- which could boost the economy -- are "vague." European energy companies, in particular, could take a hit from a Trump victory. The Republican nominee has pledged boost both U.S. crude and coal production. And if Hillary Clinton wins? Deutsche Bank said

Donald Trump Nevada case asking for thousands of votes to be thrown out fails

Trump files Nevada voting lawsuit

Donald Trump's lawyers filed a lawsuit in Nevada claiming that polling locations were kept open "two hours beyond the designated closing time." Trump lawyers are asking for relief in case "the election of presidential electors from the State of Nevada is contested."

Donald Trump Nevada case asking for thousands of votes to be thrown out fails

Donald Trump's attempt to have thousands of election votes in Nevada thrown out has failed.
The suit claimed that some of the state's polling places had stayed open as much as two hours later than they should have, in order to allow more people to vote. Those votes could be central to the result in Nevada, which is a swing state key to any potential victory by Mr Trump.
If successful, the lawsuit would have asked that records of thousands of early votes would be discounted. But the judge said that the case was "disturbing to me" and make clear that she was "not doing it".
Long lines kept polls open past the 7 p.m. posted closing time at locations that included a Mexican market and several shopping centers. Officials say at one site, the last voter cast a ballot after 10 p.m.
The case could be just the first of a range of potential lawsuits, since Mr Trump is expected to challenge results that don't go his way if they are close.
State Republican Party chief Michael McDonald had criticised the decision to leave voting open for longer than had been expected, suggesting that it had been done to allow hispanic people to vote.
"Last night, in Clark County, they kept a poll open until 10 o'clock at night so a certain group could vote," Mr McDonald said at a Sunday rally for Trump. "The polls are supposed to cose at seven. This was kept open until 10. Yeah, you feel free right now? You think this is a free and easy election? That's why it's important."
But Democrat Hillary Clinton's campaign is dismissing the Nevada case in a Twitter message, calling it "a frivolous lawsuit."

Nevada Judge Can't Believe Trump's Lawyers: 'That’s Offensive To Me'

NEW YORK ― A judge on Tuesday shot down a legal action that Donald Trump and his campaign filed against Nevada’s Clark County alleging that certain early voting sites that were kept open to accommodate voters in line for hours were illegally kept open.
Early voting in Nevada saw huge turnouts over the weekend, particularly among Latinos, leading to complaints by one state GOP official that the polls were kept open so “certain groups” had more time to vote.
The quick-moving legal action was considered at a hearing shortly after it was filed, but the judge assigned to the case was deeply skeptical of what the Trump campaign was seeking to accomplish.
“Is this action, is this petition ... premature?” asked Gloria Sturman, a state judge on the 8th District Court in Nevada.
“We need to preserve evidence, your honor, and the party that has that evidence is Clark County,” said Brian Hardy, the lawyer for the Trump campaign.
“I’m just really puzzled by how you think you’re going to use this evidence anyway to assist the secretary of state” to investigate potential election violations, Sturman replied.
When Hardy suggested that he wanted the judge to help the campaign preserve poll data ― to “sequester ballots,” in her words ― she seemed offended.
“That’s offensive to me, because it seems to me to go against the principle that the vote is secret,” she said.
Sturman also had serious issues about disclosing poll worker information, which could have been made public if the judge granted the campaign’s request to preserve evidence. She pointed out that Trump supporters ― like the kind that roam around on Twitter ― might use the information to subject civil servants to “public intimidation, ridicule and harassment.”
“It’s disturbing to me that some of these individuals might be harassed,” she said.
“I’m not going to issue any order,” Sturman said later in the hearing, adding that she’ll let the administrative process run its course.
The Trump campaign said it filed a complaint with the Nevada secretary of state ahead of Tuesday’s civil action over the same allegations, but the judge indicated the campaign may have jumped the gun.
She added that it was the secretary of state’s call to decide the next steps in this action.
This is a developing story and will be updated.

Clash of Clans December Update Download Available with Pirates, Mermaids and Submarines

Clash of Clans December Update Download Available with Pirates, Mermaids and Submarines

According to new reports, next month, Clash of Clans will receive a major update that will bring Pirates, Mermaids and Submarines. Game&Guide website claims that the hype that was when Supercell has released the October 2016 update has vanished and, now, the company is trying to lure back all the players that left the game.
It seems that one of the reasons why many Clash of Clans players have left this game is because most of them have started playing Pokémon Go, whose launch was a real success, but it seems that the hype has ended for quite a while and it has lost a good amount of players already.
In other words, this will be the best time to bring a major update to the Clash of Clans game. However, the company will most likely not be able to release it before December 2016. Clash of Clans players are now asking Supercell to update the game before the year ends and the company is now forced to comply. If the “sea-themed” update will be released to Clash of Clans, the game will most likely also receive some new water-based buildings.
We remind you that back in July 2016, Nintendo’s Pokémon Go has outpaced Clash of Clans as the fastest mobile game ever to reach number one in terms of revenues. It took only one day for the Pokémon Go to get on top of the list in the Apple Store and about 4 days in the Google Play Store. On the other hand, Clash of Clans needed two days to get to the top in the Apple Store and seven days in the Google Play Store.
Some leaked ship photos have surely caused some excitement among the Clash of Clans players. However, we should remind you that Supercell has not confirmed any addition of sea-related characters or buildings.
Do you think that Clash of Clans will receive a major update in December 2016?

Clash Of Clans December Update To Introduce Sea-Themed Creatures, Red Barbarian King?

#ClashOfClans #Gaming – Clash Of Clans December Update To Introduce Sea-Themed Creatures, Red Barbarian King? : Following the big October update, a brand new one (December update) seems to be on its way to Clash of Clans. In fact, it’s deemed as a major update, one that’ll bring lots of interesting features and stuff. One is the talked about possibility of Supercell introducing sea-themed creatures.
Apart from that, a so-called Red Barbarian King is also coming. According to Neurogadget, a major Clash of Clans update is arriving to the game sooner or later. Although its release date remains a mystery, it’s said to drop anytime in December – perfect for the Holiday season. In a sense, it could possibly arrive in a way of an event or something.
The interesting part about the aforementioned Clash of Clans update is the coming of sea-themed creatures. That Mermaids, Pirates and Submarines, among others, are believed to be part of the forthcoming patch. Heck, new items (such as spells) are also hinted to be part of it all.
This Clash of Clan rumor rooted from the studio’s way of releasing updates. It’s worth noting that the company is fond of unleashing two updates in a month. Unfortunately, in October, only one has arrived (which was even meant for September). And now, as a way to lure the hype back, the developers have decided to ramp things up come December.
Phone Arena, on the other hand, a Redditor by the name of Chief Spencer suggests that a new Clash of Clans character is coming. This is called the Red Barbarian King. No specifics have been teased, but it’s believed that if players buy a gem package, the hero is theirs for the taking with a Red Archer Queen as an addition.
Moreover, if the sea-themed update is really coming to Clash of Clans, it’s very likely for water-based buildings and/or vessels to arrive. This could range from ships all the way to war infrastructure based in seas. This is really something worth looking forward to.
What are your thoughts on the supposed December Clash of Clans update? Do you think Supercell will indeed introduce sea-inspired items and/or creatures? If so, what are your expectations? Share us your thoughts at the comment section below! Source: itechpost

‘Clash of Clans’ December Update: Leaks, What To Expect

#ClashOfClans #Gaming – ‘Clash of Clans’ December Update: Leaks, What To Expect : Fans of the game “Clash of Clans” just recently got a huge October update, which provided tons of improvements and new gameplay elements. Are we looking for even more this December?
Mobipicker recently reported that there has been a leaked info regarding the upcoming December update for “Clash of Clans.” Reddit Chief Spencer apparently revealed some of the upcoming updates content through careful data mining.
Though the details aren’t 100 percent confirmed, most of them have huge significance to the current version of the game, making these alleged “leaks” more believable. The leak suggests that the Barbarian King’s statue will now grant players the ability to acquire a new decoration for it for 500 gems. Purchasing the Red Barbarian king will also give players a red archer queen bundled.
The shipyard may also be unlocked at Town Hall 4 and as it appears, it may cost 50, 000 gold. This hints that there would be more content related to sea units. The Eagle Artillery has the ability to reach wide ranges including water if anything, this may also be a hint that water units or troops or even pirates may be added in the game later.
“Clash of Clans” players have always wanted and demanded for an update that will expand the game’s reaches on the seas hopefully before the year ends. If this will be granted, even more former players might return and find themselves building water-based bases.
The chances of this happening is quite high as the leaks are too convincing to be mere hoaxes. The video below shows the leaked repairable shipwrecks, which could be used as an addition to their bases.
The previous updates have already covered the skies with the baby dragon and dragon units, though still under powered. Still, lots of fans are highly convinced that the next update will be about the seas and units related to it. Hopefully, this update for “Clash of Clans” don’t keep getting delayed again ultimately to 2017. Source: mobilenapps

Reading Stockholm Riots 2013 in social media by text-mining

Reading Stockholm Riots 2013 in social media by text-mining

1 Reading Stockholm Riots 2013 in social media by text-mining Andrzej Jarynowski 1,2,3, Amir Rostami 1 1) Department of Sociology, Stockholm University, Stockholm, Sweden 2) Department of Theory of Complex System, Smoluchowski Institute, Jagiellonian University, Cracow, Poland 3) Laboratory of Technics of Virtual Reality, CIOP National Research Instutute, Warsaw, Poland Abstract The riots in Stockholm in May 2013 were an event that reverberated in the world media for its dimension of violence that had spread through the Swedish capital. In this study we have investigated the role of social media in creating media phenomena via text mining and natural language processing. We have focused on two channels of communication for our analysis: Twitter and Poloniainfo.se (Forum of Polish community in Sweden). Our preliminary results show some hot topics driving discussion related mostly to Swedish Police and Swedish Politics by counting word usage. Typical features for media intervention are presented. We have built networks of most popular phrases, clustered by categories (geography, media institution, etc.). Sentiment analysis shows negative connotation with Police. The aim of this preliminary exploratory quantitative study was to generate questions and hypotheses, which we could carefully follow by deeper more qualitative methods. Keywords: text-mining, cyberemotions, social networks, riots, sentiment analysis, language semantics 1. Introduction The language and its products are the most important source of information of people s states of mind in communication process (Babtist 2010). The semantic and structural analysis of texts could shed more light on human perception, interpretation and creation of social phenomena like riots. Moreover, thinking in terms of networks and hierarchy (associations between words and terms) has gained ground in many disciplines (Mouge 2003), including psychology, criminology, anthropology, political science, while it has risen from physics and sociology. Our aim is to provide qualitative analysis of how people discuss Stockholm riots and what are their stimuli to such activity. To do so, we investigate Forum posts (Poloniainfo.se) and Twitter during and after riots. We choose those datasets, because, they are freely available and can be legally crawled from Internet and both can be treated as big data. Unfortunately, both Medias represent bias, due to very special category of people using them, and conclusions based on those communities cannot be directly generalize for the whole population. However, some insights for future studies could be obtained, especially from Twitter (Polonia.info is even less representative and findings from there could only help us to understand the complexity of riot phenomena). The scientific community has already experienced the power of social network media since the riots in Tottenham, north London, in August 2011 (theguardian&lse 2011). Since then Twitter and any other social media were carefully investigated for almost every social movement such as STOP-ACTA (Jarynowski 2013) or Smoleńsk crash (Sobkowicz 2013) in Poland with computational tools constructed for this problem. We try some simple tools of NLP (natural language processing) and text-mining (Yuskiv 2006) to obtain some kind of hierarchical or network structure of concepts mentioned by Internet-users. The initial disturbances in Husby, a suburb in the northern part of Stockholm, were triggered by the police shooting of an old Maghreb-origin man. Most of the discussion took place during riots since (incident with police) via period of actual riots and shortly after that. Both Forum and Twitter data were collected from till middle of July (15.07) so both data series are exactly 2 months long. With the relatively high standard of living in Sweden (even suburban area of Stockholm like Husby is a long way away from poorness), the economic grievances were probably not the primary motivating factor in these protests (Barker 2013). The riots in Stockholm have been carried out by a combination of angry local youths, radical left-wing activists and hardened criminals (Rostami 2012). Swedish Police have already intervened against many similar size riots like in Rosengård (Malmö) in 2009 or in other neighborhoods often gathered people with socio-economic problems (Nilson 2011). Criminologists note that the segregation issues, which have been driving riots in 20 th century, turn in 21 th into: alienation, rootlessness, unemployment, distrust and resentment against society (Hallsworth 2011). Our goal is longitudinal text-mining analyses of public opinion (within social media) on the riot in order to explain its phenomena theoretically described by criminologists, put some light on driving factors, which warm up the discourse and set up some hypothesis about emergence of media phenomena. 2. Twitter 2.1. Data description and objectives We analyze ~14k Tweets in different languages (mostly Swedish and English) tagged with hash Husby. That s implying international perspective of people, who express their thoughts via Twitter. Because of Multilanguage perspective of such Tweets, we decide to analyze not whole content of those tweets, but only co-occurrence with other hash tags. We do not differentiate who was
2 twitting: simple users, mainstream media, nonmainstream media, bloggers, activists, or even and the police. Only ~ 8k Tweets were taken in our analysis (only those with more than one hash tag). We choose the 20 most frequent tags, there Svpol is the most frequent with Sthlmriots and Migpol far behind and rest (Table 1). We decided to analyze hash tags, just as they are, but there could be possibility to categorize some hash tags in just one category (e.g. by combining Sthlmriots with Stkhlmriot). No Hash tag English meaning Counts 1 Svpol Swedish Politics Sthlmriots Sthlmriots Migpol Migration Politics Sthlmriot Sthlmriot Stockholm Stockholm Aftonbladet Press company Nymo Press company Rinkeby District of Stockholm Polisen Police Sweden Sweden Upplopp Riots Kista District of Stockholm Svtdebatt Debate in Swedish TV Vpol Left Politics Debatt Debate pol Police PR Department Expressentv TV Program Megafonen Political Activists Kravaller Riots Tensta District of Stockholm 69 Table 1: Most frequent tags 2.2. Longitude analysis We found, that for example Svpol (Fig. 1) and Migpol (Fig. 2) are tags, which were in constant use for the whole period. The shape of cumulative hash tags counts curve for them is almost linear. That means: the occurrence probabilities are equal in time. Moreover, every second twit since beginning of riots till middle of July is associated with Svpol hash tag. The rest of the hash tags died out after riots finished. Tags used svpol sthlmriots Cumulative hash tags count Tweets Fig. 1: Longitudinal analysis of two most frequent tags (Svpol, Stkhlmriots) Moreover, for tags like Debatt or Svtdebatt, we observed, that people used them only around the event (Fig. 2), which is a very common phenomena in Twitter world. Some media names hash tags have a stepwise shape like Nymo (Fig. 2), which also is characteristic for media. Those institutions provide some news, which are likely to be retwited. That explains the big number of media hash tag use in short time surrounded by quiet regions (Chmiel 2011). The frequency of usage of given media hash tags could be also an indicator of how influential that medium is. Tags used Cumulative hash tags count migpol sthlmriot stockholm aftonbladet nymo rinkeby polisen sweden upplopp kista svtdebatt vpol debatt 08pol expressentv megafonen kravaller tensta Fig. 2: Longitudinal analysis of rest of most frequent tags 2.3. Association analysis We also try to find assotiation between tags. We define the link, when in the same tweet both tags coexist. Hierarchical analysis shows leading role of dyad Svpol- Sthhlmriots (Fig. 3, Table 2). Moreover, 2-gram elements (co-occurrence of 2 terms in one twit) of main dual dyad sthlmriots_svpol and svpol_migpol are a few times more frequent than other elements (Table 2). However, we cannot call triangle Migpol, Svpol, Sthlmriots as triad, because the link between Migpol and Sthlmriots was observed only 37 times so it is an order of magnitude weaker than main double dyad. No Hash tag Counts 1 sthlmriots_svpol svpol_migpol svpol_sthlmriot migpol_nymo 50 5 vpol_svpol 47 Table 2: The most frequent 2-grams. Evidence of importnace of dual dyad sthlmriots_svpol and svpol_migpol. Let s define construction of the network (Fig. 3). We decided to establish lower threshold on the level of 2 tweets, needed to create a link (everything below seems to be a noise, because link- association should be repeated at least once to avoid random effects). Thickness of the link corresponds to its weight (count of given 2- gram). On the other hand, dual dyad sthlmriots_svpol and svpol_migpol thicknesses were reduced not to cover the whole figure.
3 describe problems of Husby citizens unlike their own perspective. Fig. 3: Network of connections (links thinness in dual dyad sthlmriots_svpol and svpol_migpol were decreased to see other links also) Network analysis (Buda 2013) show leading role of dyad Svpol-Sthhlmriots and quasi-triangle Migpol, Svpol, Sthlmriots. On the other hand we can find clusters of geographical districts, tags related to debate, Swedish words describing riots, and media institution Conclusions of Twitter analysis The provided analysis shows many features known already from other studies (stepwise functions for cumulative Tweets count for media organization or clusterization of hashes within similar semantic field) and general observation, but here they are presented in a more systematized way. The most important topic is politics. Svpol as other hashes with the same meaning, are definitively the most frequent hash tags. Moreover only Svpol and Migpol seem to be used after riots with the same frequency as before. It would be interesting to see how hashes about politics co-occurrence with others change with time. Another question could be asked with sentiment analysis: how emotionally oriented are hashes about politics. 3. Poloniainfo.se 3.1. Data description and objectives Internet Forums like poloniainfo.se are not broadcasting media as Twitter, but relations between users are usually stronger and more personal. Quantitative research could be deeper due to complex relations between users (Zbieg 2012), but on the other hand amount the of data is not as impressive as Twitter. We look at frequencies of world used by Forum user in Topic about Riots in 525 Posts. We choose only Polish words in this analysis. Firstly we found extremely huge amount of personal and possessive pronouns of third person in plural form (Table 3). Everything seems to be describing about Them more often called others in ethnological literature (Bauman 1996). They are native Swedes represented mostly by government and police and another They : riot participants. That indicates observative and little biased way of looking on the riots presented by Forum users (Gustafsson in press). The Polish community did not take part in riots, and on the other hand have no significant influence on politics of Sweden. That makes this medium neutral, while views: both for and against the riots were presented there. However, Polish people identify themselves culturally with Swedish establishment and interesting pronoun compared Polish freq pronoun Polish freq them im 79 us nam 4 the tym 102 us nam - them/ their/ ours/ nasze/ nasz/ theirs ich 72 our nasza 2 they oni 53 we my 1 these ci 48 we my - them nich 38 us nas 13 Table 3: Orientation of conversation on them 3.2. Methodology and data mining We tried to categories words used in discussion in few categories. To do so, we choose only those words, which have only one clear meaning somehow related to the topic. We found 386 different words, which appear at least once in our sample and seem to have some important meaning. From them around 300 were attached to different categories 1-10 with subcategories described by some keywords (Table 4). Every category allocate sum of number of unique words, which belong to family of given keywords related to given category or subcategories. 1.1 Employment (work/employees, hardworking, rich, money, taxes) 1.2 Unemployment (unemployment, social help, poor) 2 Family (family) 3 Religion (Islam, religion) 4 Education (education, schools, learn, language) 5 Living (apartments/residents, district) 6.0 Politics-general (government, debate, party, politicians, democracy) 6.1 Politics-multikulti (invite, acclimatization, multikulti politics, hope, tolerance, asylum, get, arrives) 6.2 Politics-segregation (racist names, eugenics, racism, segregation, deportation, hate) 7.0 Identity-general (nation, Stockholm, society) 7.1 They (immigrants, Arabian, other nations, origin) 7.2 Swedes (Swedes, Swedish, Sweden, Europe, nobility) 8.0 Police-general (police, military) 8.1 Police-induce (killed, wounds, induce, bullets, weapon, shoot, Police in slang, knife, disarm) 8.2 Police-law (law, cutthroat, action in the name of law) 9.0 Riots-general (throw, riots, night, street, violence, stones, car) 9.1 Riots-pro (rebellion, youth, protest, vulnerable) 9.2 Vandalism (fires, vandalism, aggression) 10 External fields (other riots, problems, wars, media) Table 4: Categories, subcategories and keywords describing them
4 3.3. Limitation of coding Meaning of words used by people is very difficult to uniqueness classification. In our task we propose 10 main categories with 14 subcategories and attract presented words into given keywords related to descriptive category or subcategory. Classification is based on our subjective feeling. We tried to avoid words with many meanings. We had problems with words: Stockholm/Sweden (does not only relate with that city/country, but also geographical location); Swedish/Swedes (does not only describe citizenship of Sweden, but also the background of the riots); all words classified to categories pro riots or pro police (words connoted with law or rebellion have mostly positive meaning, but not always); all words classified to category external forces (e. g. none of media institution like radio, TV, press, or Internet companies names were included in investigation) Also all of categories have very wide range of potential connotation and some of them could overlap (e. g. where should be the border between employment and unemployment), but we tried to help ourselves with keyword list (Table 4) Results of categorization From results, we can conclude, that the main conflict is going on around identity, police operation and riots itself, work and living issues. Politics, education and family related issues plays secondary role, but still such topics were discussed by Forum users. The main subject of discussion seems to focus around identity (the biggest count of related words) which was already observed from intensively of pronounce use (Table 3). Moreover, motor of conflict could be defined as Swedes-They. While there are some coding problems with identity (are literary Swedes associated with literary category 7.2?), the second frequent category: Employment is probably the biggest single issue related to Stockholm s riots mentioned by Forum users. The smallest subcategory (Police-pro) is one related to the positive side of police operation. One order of magnitude often Police was described by negative or neutral connotation. Fig. 4: Categories and Subcategories from most to least popular Fig. 5: Categories and categories containing subcategories. * means sum of all counts of subcategories for given category 3.5. Sentiment analysis of 2-grams with Police We extract all 2-grams where the word police or police officer appears. We run sentiment analysis on each 2-gram. The sentence sentiment strength 1 could vary from -4 (very negative) to +4 (very positive). Most of them have been neutral and sensitive strength is 0. We analyze all those 2-grams, which were found more than once. To illustrate, we show few most frequent 2-grams (Table 5). Moreover, Polish stop words (without meaning) were excluded also. To get effective power, we multiply frequency by sensitive strength. The overall score of power for all 2-grams containing word Police is slightly negative (-5). Polish 2- English 2 sensi gram gram No. strenth Pow. szwedzka policja Swedish police policja używa police uses granatniki policjanci police launchers jaka policja what the police mogła policja police could mordować policja police murders Sum Power -5 Table 5: Most frequent 2-grams with Police, Policeman or Police officer with their sentiment score and frequency Conclusions and future works for Poloniainfo.se This work has only exploratory function, but even those preliminary results; we can propose few hypotheses, which should be checked by deeper investigation. The first one is related to Police operation. Please note, that we do not want to evaluate professionalism of Police, but only public opinion about their operation. Datamining analysis proposed by us has many weak sides and it is usually very difficult to make clear conclusions from it. In the Police case, order of magnitude difference 1 We use tool: Sesnistrenth (Thelwall 2012) for English translation of Polish sentences
5 between positive and both negative and neutral cases seem to be something more than methodological bias or artifact. Why Forum users even, they identify themself with Swedish establishment did not say almost anything positive about Police? Did PR department of Police work properly? One user wrote, that Swedish Police as a best paid organization in EU is one of the less effective at the same time. We propose to survey public evaluation about Police operation. Moreover sentiment and association analysis should also give some more insight, while preliminary results show little negative emotional orientation (Table 5). This sample is unfortunately too small for any conclusions and bigger datasets should be used to estimate actual sensitive power. Employment also seems to be relatively important topic (Fig. 4, 5). Work issue, with connotation with taxes and salaries should be more carefully investigated if that is really a leading factor of discussions about riots. It beats some aspects of identity (and even identity also if other coders would not include geographical word e. g. Stockholm into identity category) and religion, living condition or education form frequentional analysis. However, it could come from bias, that Poles describing riots are mostly guest workers and work, as a single theme, is the most popular within Polish community in Sweden. 4. General findings, limitation of both studies and speculations The role of Police and politics should be investigated, because in Twitter politics (Table 2) and in Forum Police (Fig. 5) are the main motors of opinion spread between people. Both studies are only preliminary and just explore the field to set up questions to be ask by pragmatic research. Both datasets are not representative for the whole society and opinion shared in both mediums are very special to people who use them. Moreover in each study different methodology was used due to difference of data structure itself, and even in content. Some aspects revealed in one study were omitted in the second one. For example media institutions, which play important role in hash tag study, were not categorized anywhere in Forum case. However, similar issues come out from both mediums. As the result from this preliminary analysis hypotheses about emergence of media phenomena appear, while similar size riots reported by police went unnoticed (Nilsson 2012). For example: how influential actors used social media like bloggers, journalist, political activist made this topic so popular and it has been discussing till now (Fig. 1). The next part of this project will focus on network analysis of role of such actors. While sociologists try to understand mechanisms of riots arising, underlying psychological and sociological patterns, and the presentation of riots in the mass media, natural language processing and text mining are great supplementary tools for that. Criminologists, on the other hand, focus on recent causation theories and suggest various ways of controlling riots (Sarnecki 2001). They are aware of similar incidents and forecast intensification of riots in the future due to stratification of society with overrepresentation of "urban underclass. That indicates the need for adjusting computational methods to problems, and this paper is a preliminary approach for that. Poland’s second Katyń: out of the ashes smoleńsk

Poland’s second Katyń: out of the ashes

The flight-disaster that consumed Poland’s president and dozens of the nation’s senior figures may be followed by a lasting improvement in relations between Warsaw and Moscow, says Krzysztof Bobinski.
Everyone tries to behave well when confronted by tragedy. Vladimir Putin, the Russian prime minister, is proving no exception. He and the Russian authorities have behaved with notable compassion in the aftermath of the Polish plane-crash near the city of Smoleńsk on the morning of 10 April 2010 which killed ninety-seven people. These included Lech Kaczyński, the Polish president, his wife as well as numerous officials, the entire Polish military high-command, and the central-bank governor. Also on board were family members of the victims of the massacre in April 1940 by the a Soviet NKVD, when over 4,000 interned officers were murdered on Stalin’s orders in Katyń wood outside Smoleńsk. Since then the word Katyń has come to symbolise the murder of some 22,000 Polish officers, officials, policeman and landowners killed by the Soviets that spring seventy years ago.
Lech Kaczyński, elected president of Poland in 2005, had not been Vladimir Putin’s favourite Polish politician. The diminutive Polish leader, with his twin brother Jarosław, had run Poland from 2005-07 (with Jarosław as prime minister of the government led by their Prawo i Sprawiedliwość [Law & Justice / PiS] party); the twins pursued a tough line on Russia as well as the European Union, and showed authoritarian tendencies at home which aimed at rooting out corruption but had worryingly begun to infringe on civil liberties (see Adam Szostkiewicz, "Poland marches: the people sound the alarm", 12 October 2006).
An election in 2007 saw Jarosław voted out and replaced by the more liberal Donald Tusk and his Platforma Obywatelska (Civic Platform) party, but left Lech to fight the PiS corner. The consequence was that Polish foreign policy pursued a more variable course: Tusk as prime minister moved to improve relations with Moscow, while Kaczyński as president continued to stress support for Georgia and Ukraine and to demonstrate a distrust of Vladimir Putin and his successor as Russia’s president, Dmitry Medvedev.
The fact that Donald Tusk had been in Katyń two days before Lech Kaczyński was due there and attended a separate commemorative ceremony with Putin showed the gulf that existed between the two Polish leaders. In his commemorative address on 8 April, Putin referred to the other victims of “the Stalinist repressions of the 1930s” who are buried in Katyń wood. The use of this area as an NKVD killing-ground was well known to people living in the neighbourhood but it was something they only whispered about for many years after 1945.
Putin here linked the fate of “Soviet citizens who burned in the fire of Stalinist repression of the 1930s, Polish officers shot according to a secret order, and Red Army soldiers shot by the Nazis during the Great Patriotic War”; thus making the point that Russia and Poland shared a common fate in the 20th century. There is a hint here of a lasting improvement in Polish-Russian relations based on a reconciliation over the issue of the 1940 massacre.
The speech which Kaczyński had prepared for his Katyń memorial, released on 12 April, can also be seen as in part conciliatory: “Let’s make the Katyń wound finally heal. We are already on the way to do it. We, Poles, appreciate what Russians have done in the past years. We should follow the path which brings our nations closer, we should not stop or go back” (see “President Kaczynski’s last speech”, PolskieRadio, 12 April 2010).
A bend in the river
But if the Russian prime minister set the murder of the Polish officers in the context of the massive killings in the Soviet Union at the hands of Joseph Stalin and his predecessors, he was careful not to mention Stalin directly. Behind this diplomatic caution lies another anniversary: in May 2010 the Russians will host the sixty-fifth anniversary of the end of the second world war, when Stalin completed the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany to the everlasting pride of Soviet veterans and many others in today’s Russia.
Lech Kaczyński had been planning to be in Moscow for that event, despite his lack of trust in Medvedev and Putin. But whatever he might have said there or in Katyń, the circumstances surrounding his death and the evident good relations between Vladimir Putin and Donald Tusk may combine to open a new chapter in the ways that Russia and Poland interconnect.
There are many reasons why these bilateral relations have been poor. Russia’s energy policy and its NordStream pipeline under the Baltic to bring gas to western Europe is but one. The Katyń massacre too has continued to have a large significance. The event may be small by Soviet standards in terms of numbers killed, and Russians as well as Ukrainians and others themselves suffered in some cases greater tragedies before and during the war; but Katyń has become for Poles (notwithstanding Mikhail Gorbachev’s acknowledgment in 1990 of Soviet responsibility) a symbol of Soviet brutality and duplicity, which they feel needs to be more fully accepted by Moscow as a major crime to ensure that the historical record is clear and any possibility of denial - or repeat - is excluded.
The grounds for this attitude on the Polish side include countless stories in the Russian media which continue to assert or imply that the crime was committed by the Nazis. Indeed a deposition by the families of the Katyń victims in the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg was met by a Russian claim that there is no proof of any such crime. Indeed, even as the Moscow-based English-language television channel Russia Today reported on the Smoleńsk crash it would go no further than saying that the planned ceremonies were to commemorate the victims of “totalitarian repression” who had been murdered “during the war’.
Now, there is evidence that the Russian and Polish prime ministers have opened the way to full disclosure. Vladimir Putin’s behaviour in the wake of the tragedy - part of a Russian response described as “impeccable” by Poland’s foreign minister, Radek Sikorski - raises hopes that the reconciliation around the Katyń anniversary could lead to a permanent improvement of relations. The showing of Andrzej Wajda’s film-drama Katyń on Russian state television on the evening of 11 April 2010 is a further symbolic sign of what may become a genuine opening.
The Poles will have to be careful that this should not entail abandoning support for the independence of states like Georgia and Ukraine, to which Lech Kaczyński paid such great attention. But it would be a singular twist of history if a disaster which took the life of a Polish politicians sceptical of Russia paves the way to closer bonds between the two countries and peoples.

Polar plunge toddler is cancer-free

Polar plunge toddler is cancer-free

Two years ago, the nation rallied behind a baby from rural Northwest Missouri who doctors gave a 5 percent chance to live after a cancer diagnosis. Three years later, he’s beating the odds.
“Numbers did not tell us anything because we knew he would make it,” said Alyssa Shaw, Landon’s mother.
Landon Shaw was born Oct. 21, 2013. Four months later, doctors discovered cancer in his liver. Shaw said he was diagnosed with Stage 4 brain cancer and an atypical rhabdoid tumor — which typically travels to the brain. A 12-hour brain surgery was performed to remove a large mass by his brain stem.
“Doctors came in and told us he wouldn’t make it because of too much blood loss,” Shaw said. "We saw him in the PICU (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit) several hours later, and his eyes were open looking at us, and it’s been a journey since then.”
Shaw said her son endured 48 rounds of chemotherapy and six weeks of radiation. She also said his last medical treatment was May 2015 and the following month he was declared cancer-free.
“Landon is the happiest baby, toddler, child that I have ever known. ... With everything that he endured and everything he is not capable of doing, he does not let anything stop him,” Shaw said.
Landon’s story went viral and the masses began accepting the polar plunge challenge to raise money for his medical bills.
“I don’t know what we would do without them,” Shaw said. “All the support, the videos that made us laugh. ... Landon still loves to watch them to this day.”
Today he is a preschool student at Tarkio Elementary School.
“He loves school. He loves the teachers, and the other kids make him so happy,” Shaw said. “They have a sensory room at the school for kids with autism or sensory issues — It’s so relaxing for him.”
Landon still faces many challenges. He receives nourishment through a feeding tube and cannot walk or talk.
“There’s nothing medically that can make him not walk — It’s just time to build up muscle and strength and getting him used to pressure on his legs,” Shaw said.
She said they are working on oral feedings with little success and the radiation treatments possibly caused his lack of speech.
“He’s 3 years old, but they probably put him at an 8-month-old,” Shaw said. He is figuring out things like crawling, sitting and just grabbing things and getting what most babies get the first year of life.”
She also said they visit doctors frequently and his development is progressing faster.
“He has gotten up on all fours, which is a big milestone,” Shaw said. “When he was in the hospital, he was on his back most of the time. He didn’t start rolling until the end of his therapy. He just started sitting up on his own without any props, so it’s awesome.”
Shaw said people still ask about Landon, and she is grateful for their continuous support. To learn more about Landon’s story, visit his Facebook pages at “Team Landon” or “Plunges for Landon”
“What’s next for Landon is that he’s going to be a kid and get to enjoy things that he never could,” Shaw said.

Cancer free for six years, 'miracle' water boy beats the odds

Cancer free for six years, 'miracle' water boy beats the odds

BAY CITY, MI — Following an incomplete pass in Bay City Central High School's first football game of the season, head coach Morley Fraser called a timeout to regroup his team.
As soon as the whistle blew, the team's water boy, a 4-foot tall 8-year-old, sprinted to the huddle of towering players to hand out water bottles.
Ian Anderson has been a football fan his whole life. His love of the game comes from his parents Gina and Dan Anderson, who have taken him to Michigan State University and Bay City Central games since he was a young boy. So, when the opportunity came up this year to be the team's water boy, he jumped on it.
"It's great having him," Fraser said. "He takes the job very seriously. He's 100 percent focused on the sideline."
Ian has needed that laser focus his entire life. He isn't like any other 8-year-old boy who might serve as the team's honorary water boy for any given season.
His story is different. It's one of incredible struggle and heartstring-tugging recovery.
And it's again being celebrated. Today, Nov. 8, Ian has been cancer free for six years, proving doctors wrong and continually beating the odds.
"Our miracle has surpassed their predictions," his mom said.
It was supposed to be a celebration
More than seven years ago, Gina Anderson's family gathered in her kitchen to honor Mother's Day, but there was something off about her then 1-year-old son Ian. The Bay City boy wasn't moving. He wasn't looking at her. His bubbly personality had disappeared.
Something was wrong.
They took Ian to the hospital where he was initially diagnosed with constipation. Gina Anderson knew there was more to the diagnosis, though. A doctor later discovered a large mass — an Ependymoma pediatric tumor — on his brain.
"You never want anything bad to happen to your children," Gina Anderson said. "You want to see them prosper and grow to be thriving adults."
The young boy was transported to Mott Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor for an emergency surgery. Doctors warned Ian's family that his life after the procedure likely wouldn't be same. Chances were high of him becoming wheelchair-bound with suction.
Following the procedure, he underwent 17 months of chemotherapy and six weeks of radiation.
He was strong. He was resilient. And he never gave up.
On Nov. 8, 2011, Ian had his final treatment. Doctors told him he was cancer free.
Six years after his diagnosis, he is a normal 8-year-old again.
Today, he still has a yearly MRI during the summer. He appears to be growing normally, his mother said.
There is a chance a secondary type of cancer could form in the future, his mother said. "The chemotherapy and radiation could possibly create another tumor in the lining of the brain," she said.
"So we're hoping that never happens. Our goal is to get to 18 and then he'll have grown out of this type of cancer."
After 18, Ian can go on to have MRI's every 5 years.

Life today
Throughout the surgeries and treatment, his family has remained positive.
Ian, his mother, Gina, father, Dan, sister Greer, 10, and brother Easton, 13, celebrate "Yes Days," derived from a motivational book.
It's a moment where they can spend time outside with each other, instead of in a hospital room.
Ice cream for breakfast? Yes.
Pajamas all day? Of course.
Take a roll down the hill at Veterans Memorial Park? Absolutely.
"He has no bad days and when I think I'm going to have a bad day I look at him," his mother said. "He inspires us and makes us laugh."
Ian is a third grade student at Kolb Elementary, where is mom also works as a teacher. His favorite subject is math.
"I got skills," he says.
But he doesn't see a future in crunching numbers. He wants to be in the locker room working with a sports team.

Sports
Ian has been a regular at Michigan State University hockey games as an honorary member of the Spartan team. He assists MSU athletic trainer Dave Carrier in getting the players ready for practice and games. Ian hopes to pursue a similar career.
His love for MSU has been well documented while he has fought cancer 65 miles southeast in Ann Arbor, home of the University of Michigan Wolverines.
Employees at the children's hospital there said Ian always had the same greeting as he was wheeled out of radiation therapy appointments. It started with a fist-bump and ended with a, "Go State!"
He proudly sports his green and white at each medical appointment, reminding U-M doctors which team he roots for on the football field.

"He just has such great enthusiasm for life and, of course, for Michigan State," said Karin Muraszko, M.D., chair of the U-M Medical School's Department of Neurosurgery.
"He was always very honest with us about how much he loves the Spartans. But we are all on one team, and that team is taking care of Ian."
His mom hesitated when describing Ian's life after cancer.
"Actually, this is life beyond cancer," she said. "We're beyond it now."
